EMERGENCY CARE
While quite rare, when orthodontic emergencies do occur we are always available to you. We are happy to assist you in alleviating severe pain or a painful appliance problem that is beyond your ability to resolve temporarily.
For instance, if any pieces have come loose, simply put them in a plastic bag or envelope and bring them in when you to your next appointment. If your braces are poking your mouth or gums, apply some soft wax on the piece that is sticking out for temporary protection. If the wire has moved out of position, you can use needle-nose pliers to manipulate it back into the tube on the back tooth.
Once you resolve your discomfort, it is very important that you call our office as soon as possible to schedule a time to allow us to properly maintain your appliance. If it remains damaged for an extended period of time, disruptions to your treatment plan may occur.
GENERAL SORENESS
After your braces are in place, it is not uncommon to feel general soreness in your mouth, and your teeth may be tender to light pressure for a few days. Avoiding hard foods is advised until your teeth are no longer sore when chewing. To alleviate irritated gums and other sore spots, you can rinse your mouth using a salt-water mouthwash. Dissolve one teaspoon full of salt in eight ounces of warm water, and use the solution to rinse your mouth vigorously. Do not swallow the solution. If the soreness is more severe or persistent, we recommend taking Acetaminophen (Tylenol) to help alleviate the pain. Aspirin, Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and Naproxen Sodium (Naprosyn, Anaprox) actually slow the tooth movement, so we advise against their regular use while wearing braces.
The lips, cheeks, and tongue may become irritated for a week or two as they learn a new posture and become accustomed to the presence of the braces. We will be happy to show you how to apply wax to reduce this irritation.
